Help me to choose location of stickers on airbox

PostPost by: Pistacchio sprint 72 » Sun Jan 27, 2013 4:44 pm

This make sens. However, i doubt the sticker will stay stuck if bent to go over the lip/bulge...

But it is worth a try. Sue should provide a pic to show How to locale them!

When you go to stick them on, first clean the area with a de-greasing agent such as white spirit or meths or degreaser. Then clean the area with a small amount of water with a little added detergent. This cleans away any residue from the de-greaser etc. Carefully position your sticker & gently rub it down with your finger or thumb. Now get a heat gun and carefully warm sticker until it is reasonably warm to the touch. Be carefully with the heat gun though, keep it about 6 inches (150mm) from sticker & gently warm it. Watch your fingers, the fibreglass air box & carbs etc, you only want it warmed to allow the glue to work properly. As long as you clean it properly & warm it as I said it should stay there and not peel off. Again, careful where you rest the heat gun as I have burnt/melted quite a few things in the past. A word of warning though, make sure your hands are clean just before you stick it on and be careful when wiping the sticker as any solvents present in the cloth/rag with wipe off the screen printed inks. Oil residue or petrol will also strip off the ink.

Susan Miller's ones for the carbs have an invisible clear laminate which protects the ink from being wiped off, all of the other ones out there as far as I know don't, so be careful. Take care either way.

Let me know if any of that was not clear, hope it helps.

Stuck my ones on today.. Trimmed the red and white a bit and it fits easily. Quick wipe with Brake cleaner and on they went no bother. I warmed them up by sitting on them for a while... No...? Oh well. I did sit my cup of tea on the sticker to flex it up a bit though...... Well.. I would have had to go get my heat gun!

It 'aint coming off easy..

That's a grand looking job Alex, well done!

With the exception of the braided fuel lines, looks like it's just rolled off the line at Hethel!

Hi Everyone

I can't say I've ever noticed the black sticker on an unrestored Elan but here they both are on my Europa

Anyone know what should go on a Stromberg (non-federal) airbox - I presume it's just the white one ?

Rdent has a black Stromberg sticker (and the white one).

Alex: where did you get your Lotus wing protector?

Thanks Vernon but that's the Federal sticker RD has - not applicable to the non-federal (UK) Stromberg engine. Did UK Stromberg cars have just the white "IMPORTANT" label about the flexible mountings or was there anything else ? The carburettor illustration in the workshop manual appears to show only the one but not sure how accurate the drawing is. My own car has never had any labels on the airbox - hence my question.

Roger

I've had a look through my old original Elan S4 road tests and they all appear to show just the one, white label.
