"pancake" ZS air filter question

Hello folks.
I've been running a set of 'pancake' air filters over a pair of ZS carbs on a federal S4.
I occurred to me one day when I opened the bonnet how hot it gets in there, and that perhaps the motor is not so happy breathing all that in through those local pancake filters. Am I doing the motor an injustice? I've tried to use the stock airbox in the past, but for reasons that are beyond me, the fit was difficult, i.e., the front opening would rub hard against the wheel well, and I just don't feel like beating that problem to death (I'd probably rather fabricate a straighter airbox).
Are the pancakes a no-no, or an acceptable alternative?

Chris

Chris,
When I got my Elan, it had 2 K&N filters fitted directly to the carbs. Being a disciple of as much cold air to the engine that I can get, along with the "boost factor" you get with the air filter pointing forward behind the grille, they had to go.

I too had the problem with the air intake to the air box hitting the inner fender well. So, I cut a wedge out and re-oriented the tube portion to point where I wanted it, and re-glassed it back together. A piece of flex tubing and a home made double pivot adapter was made to fit between the flexible tubing and the cone shaped filter. I used a Green Filter rather than the usual red K&N, because my car is green. But, they are essentially the same. Across the pond, cliveyboy makes a similar style adapter, but I have a lathe and enjoy making chips.

Thanks Rob-

I think I'll try the same technique. Thanks a ton!
