"pancake" ZS air filter question

Hello folks.
I've been running a set of 'pancake' air filters over a pair of ZS carbs on a federal S4.
I occurred to me one day when I opened the bonnet how hot it gets in there, and that perhaps the motor is not so happy breathing all that in through those local pancake filters. Am I doing the motor an injustice? I've tried to use the stock airbox in the past, but for reasons that are beyond me, the fit was difficult, i.e., the front opening would rub hard against the wheel well, and I just don't feel like beating that problem to death (I'd probably rather fabricate a straighter airbox).
Are the pancakes a no-no, or an acceptable alternative?
Chris
