I recently replaced mine with one of the new facet ones in a black plastic case, I also had problems geting the union to seal, in the end I used the extrra thick PTFE tape meant for gas fittings.

I have not noticed any fuel smeels since (but it's in the engine compartment so not so noticible as it would be in the boot).

Well that did the trick - no fuel smell in the boot this morning. The small puncture in the hose was causing the cotton braid to soak with fuel only when the car was running. The metal braid was covering all this up. However the build up of fuel smell only occurred when it had a few hours to seep through the braid. After that of course the pipe would no longer smell.
