fuel tank breather pipes

is there a mod to get rid of these things .i want to eradicate the smell of fuel in my garage.also when changing the rotoflexes the fumes from thease pipes made me go a bit dizzy kid regards mike

Mike,

There are several mods of breathers on the go. I've just had a go and didn't quite get it right. I know where I went wrong though.
I have cured the smell of petrol but the tank is very slow to fill.
To save you the pain of making the same mistake drop me an e-mail and I'll explain. [email protected]
If you don't want to do that, Spyder offer a mod where you send in your filler neck and they will modify it. Think it costs around ?30 to ?40.

I got rid of all the breather pipes, closed off one end with a plug and the other end is connected to my filler neck pipe by a little hose.
I had a nipple made to connect the hose the to filler neck pipe.
I think this is probably the same way Hamisch did his mod.
It cures the petrol smell but the filling of the tank is slow .

There was a good article on this some months ago in Club Lotus magazine. They explained that you need two breathers because the fuel cap is not vented and you may be filling on a slope going either towards or away from you. The mod involves joining the breathers above the tank and from this join running a small breather inside one of the current pipes over inside the roof and another small pipe up insde the filler neck (this is the tricky one as the neck has to fit through the body opening). This all gives you venting when filling and venting when running with hardly any fumes at rest.

I used the spyder conversion and am delighted with the results. I don't have any filling problems and it's nice to walk into the garage after a week and not smell the thirty quids worth of petrol I bought in the air!
