just had a go with some dilute ammonia and it cleaned them up a treat . just ordered some aluminium cleaner from The Polishing Company - hope it does what it says on the website!

Hi
Have you tried carb cleaner? I would be cautious about using anything that could damage the carb gaskets and seals.
gordonlund 's +2 always looks spotless under the bonnet, what do you use Gordon?

I had mine stripped, but found that cellulose thinners works a treat!
The thinners is cheap - buy it as "gun cleaner"

thinners is ok if it's just oil based grime . I'm thinking more of the problem of oxidation/encrustation. Anyhow, just opened parcel & will give it a go in 5 mins

I did mine with some aluminium cleaner I found in the shed with a skull and crossbones on it, don't think you can buy it any more though

I'm looking for a product to brighten-up my carbs.
Has anyone sucessfully used one that can be purchased in the UK?

Simon,
I use a cleaner called Alu, by a company called Belgom. Paul Matty stocks it. The oil pump and carbs came up very well, and the fuel pump shines almost like chrome.
Just my thought...

Good point - on the tin it says that it is a product for cleaning AND polishing. Just lifted a sticky label and found that it is supplied by ABC supplies. Two web sites (currently down for overhaul): www dot picadoreng dot co dot uk and www cetempolishing dot co dot uk.

have you tried frosts?....
I get their stuff from time to time and its been very good....
although Ive not tried the Alu poish so I cant comment but I have used their polishing kits for other this to very good effect....

These products sound similar - I've bought the Alu-Magic as it specifically states "desolves aluminium oxide"
Rather than asking and waiting I have decided to put it to the test - Lets see if it does what it claims! I'll take before and after photos.

I noticed that Frosts also sell a liquid Aluminium cleaner. Did some research on aluminium brightners andnotice that they all have phosphoric acid as the "main" ingredient.
More research - so does Alloy wheel cleaner (which I had alresdy tried) so I guessed that industrial Alloy wheel cleaner would be a bit more potent and went and bought some!
