fuel injection once more

Hi All,
I don't want to get into a debate about originality here. But. I am thinking of fuel injecting the TC. I have read an article in Club Lotus magazine, and I am aware of the injection systems offered by QED etc.. My question is, without going to huge expense of Jenvey et al throttle bodies, but using Suzuki or Kawasaki motorbike throttle bodies has anyone built an inexpensive conversion? I have looked at the Megasquirt website, and I reckon by trawling the scrappies, you should be able to pick all the bits required,(Even the ECU, from the right car) at a fraction of the cost for a QED type solution.
What do you reckon, could it be done??

There was an interesting article in one of the car mags about 3 months ago. Can't tell you which one because I left it in a hotel room but I'm pretty sure it was one of the kit car mags.

Their suggestion wasn't for injection but for individual carbs from the larger bikes. I discussed it with other interested persons I work with and the outcome we arrived at was "a great idea but a sod to balance".

I look forward to other posts on this thread.

I went off surfing but didn't find the particular magazine article online. However I did find an interesting 500+ post thread on another forum with a debate ranging over 23 pages for and against carbs/injection.
If you have a spare couple of hours try .... http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/engines- ... carbs.html

It ain't Lotus but there is info about possible equivalents for DCOE 40s & 45s and links to people who have done it.

Hi

It was in Classic Monthly, they put an injection kit on a Hillman Imp.

You will need an ECU map to match the engine and different parts or lots of time on a dyno to re-map a standard one. A kit is a lot quicker :)

Jeff and All
I am in the procss of doing just that,Megasquirt controller, scrappie donor Mondeo parts, wasted spark .GPZ1100 throttle bodies,etc.etc.

The first plan was to fit the Mondeo EECiV ecu,but this was dropped because it was not adjustable (even though within limits it should self-adjust) all the other mondeo sensors are being used though...

The megasquirt is a good piece of kit but has a steep learning curve....

Any other questions I'd be only too pleased to help

Jeff,
Go for it.
I fitted Omex mapped ignition (with Webbers) to my +2 some years ago and it gives it a lot more torque. The only minor down side is that you need a better starter to keep the cranking speed up cos the ECU needs a few revs to get it's brain into gear. I had thought about updating it to Fuel injection.

I'll be keen to see how you and John get on with it as I have been looking at the Megasquirt web site.
Keep the posts coming.
John

Could you post your ignition map for perusal as I'm looking for a base to start from?

Thanks

John,
Will do but it may take a day or two as it's on another PC and I am not sure if I can get it out of the Omex package into a MS one.
I am still using the old package that runs in DOS.

Do you have a bit of advance under your tickover RPM to prevent "stumble" if so how much?
Thanks

John

John,
No, Oh so that's how you get over the stumble is it? It only occurs when you are a bit too quick with the clutch.
I am having trouble transfering the map so have taken a pic of the screen on table format. Some will say it's a bit simplistic but I mapped it myself using the "advance till it pinks and then retard till it stops" method. My engine is 711m bottom end, 10.7 CR, Kent CPL2 cams, 40's with 34mm chokes.
Don't put this map in to start for the first time though, for that you need a flat map to set the primary setup parameters for the timing.
I'll PM you my phone no.
Cheers
John

Hi

I cant find my Classics Monthly mag but just seen another article in Jan 2008 Practical Classics, the 2 mags tend to copy each other.

There are a couple of websites on the article that may be worth a look?

www.canems.co.uk
www.triggerwheels.com

Hope this helps

Found this example of some smart work using Yamaha R6 bike carbs or possibly the later throttle bodies. Thought it might be of some interest.

The conversion was done by Bogg brothers www.boggbros.co.uk
