Stock airboxnot clearing wheel well (strombergs)

Phil from Santa Clara has been a big help in trying to get my S4 Elan back into shape, but here's an odd problem: I can't line up the stock airbox onto the carbs. The mouth of the airbox touches down on the wheel well when I am about 1/4" from lining up the screw-holes to the carbs. I think I'm doing everything 'as standard', so it seems kind of strange.

I've already trimmed all the perimeter plastic off the underside of the box.

It seems like the box should clear by a bit so there's not continuous direct contact (i.e., rattling).

Is this a problem anyone has seen before?

Thanks-

chris

Hello Chris

I would think it must be an engine mount issue. I think from memory the carb side mount raises the engine slightly higher this side (for the carbs) so perhaps you have either a collapsed mount, or the wrong mount or (and I'm not sure you can do this) but maybe you have them mixed up from left to right.

I'm sure Rohan or one of the other cleverer ones can tell you exactly but that is my two pennies worth.
I hope it helps

Regards

Adam

... Chris ,
Adam's right ; engine height : check your rubber mounts first .

Weber and Dellorto carb engines have a carb side engine mount that raises the carbs above the foot well. Stromberg engines do not need this and have a common engine mount to the exhaust side.

I think you probably need a new engine mount for the carb side.
