If it can break....

Just as I was getting ready for a nice run down to Stoneleigh - ping! Throttle response goes loose & the engine has a worrying tendency to race... Throttle return spring snapped.. So no +2 to Stoneleigh this year :(

I have a go at removing the bits, and note the throttle lever has a nasty crack in it where it has been prised apart to remove the brass thingy (no idea what it is called) in the past. No matter, I have a spare, collected for this very eventuality... Lo and behold it is different! It has a longer arm, why?! Can anyone explain to me why there are different lengths of throttle arm? Faster/slower throttle response? Which is 'correct'?

I will try and attach pics of the two arms.

Tough "break" Jeremy, but lucky the spring didn't break half way to Stoneleigh when you were "motoring on"
This is a pure quess but Webers/Delloto's were fitted to quite a few other cars plus modification kits and I doubt the ratio's between pedal and arm are all the same, I would guess one is a Lotus and the other some other car......was the new arm supplied in Lotus packing? or just from a carb supplier?

Has the one that was fitted to your car been altered at any point? It's hard to see in the photos but it looks a bit as though the smaller one has been cut down/welded - a legacy of a past repair?

Thanks for your replies, and it was good to put a few more faces to names at Stonleigh... There is always more to learn with Loti! Apparently the shorter arm is an original Lotus modification to the standard Weber arm. The arm is cut and shut to make it shorter (faster throttle response). If you ask for a new arm from Matty's, you will get the longer arm, as this apparently is all that is available new. I tried a few other Carb specialists and got the same response - cut & shut special order or make it yourself!

The longer one still works, but they may be issues at full throttle if you run out of footwell to press the accelerator into.. I haven't tried it yet, but will report back! I suppose it could be an economy measure to prevent going to full throttle....
