Strombergs - worn spindles

PostPost by: Andy Hamblin » Tue Mar 24, 2020 2:52 pm

The carbs have an air leak, new gaskets didn't fix it and the spindles have a bit of wiggle in them so thinking its likely where the leak is.

I know they can be re-bushed with new spindles - is that a DIY job or do the carbs need to be sent away for machining & rebuilding?

Thanks,
Andy

There are seals on the carb body where the spindles pass through. Changing those is a DIY job.

There a good over view video on replacing the spindle/bearings:

Older/original carbs have leather seals that can be replaced, new ones use sealed bearing.

Due to line boring needed in the alignment of new bushes I think this work would be outside DIY.
Perhaps a good pair of used 175’s bodies would be a cost effective option, used by Jaguar & Triumph TR5.

Are the spindles worn, or just the seals? The latter is a very simple job.

Check out this page for great information on rebuilding Strombergs, including a way to upgrade with bearings.

thanks to every one who posted. Just to let you know that I have sent them away to be fully rebuilt. They were untuneable and a bit of an unknown quantity anyway.
