Which direction is the mixture needle setting turned to make it lean?

Left Lean
Right Rich

Turning the allen key clockwise (to the right) pulls the needle up and richens the mixture.

THANK YOU ROGER.

I was wondering if anyone has encountered a situation where the mixture remains rich at maximum lean?

I purchased "used" adjustable "pistons" and fit new adjustable needles to replace the fixed mixture emission design.

Could the carb be incompatible with such a modification?

Check your jet height. If they're too low it's hard to get it right. Also check if they're worn - a big hole lets lots of fuel through.

Bob,

Jet height is critical as the screw to adjust from above only has three turns. 1.5 up and 1.5 down if your jet is in the exact right place. I seem to recall 96 - 100 thou being the position below the carb throat for the jet to sit. Guys in the US should know with Strombergs being the popular ones out there.

As Rogers say if the jets or needles have wear it will mess with metering. The jets are a friction fit in the carb body. I always get new jets and needles.

Mike :)

I fitted adjustable jets - provides maximum flexibility and completely solved all issues with over rich mixtures etc.
