S4 Stromberg Choke Conection

PostPost by: peterexpart » Mon Mar 04, 2013 3:11 pm

My S4 has a Cable clamp on both Carbs and a cable going to 1 Carb only, there is no Bracket as per various other posts, and it does not look as if one has ever been fitted. As the car starts fine from cold with the one choke do I assume this is how it left the factory and leave well alone ??

As far as I'm aware the std Stromberg choke set up was one cable that wound its way from one way to the other, opening both at the same time. When I bought my car in the early 80's that system had been junked and the (shortened) cable just opened the rear carb. I probably ran it like that for 10yrs and had no problems with winter starting.

I eventually tried to reinstate the original set up but the cable pull was just too heavy so I went back to just opening one choke. I've since put in a completely separate cable opening the front choke but I hardly ever use it.

Stuart
Thanks for that I will leave it as it is, only other option was a Motorcycle Cable Splitter but that seems like overkill when it starts anyway

Stuart,

I believe that some Triumph's had a twin choke cable if you wanted to go that way.

I have a +2 with Strombergs, and replaced the original single choke arrangement with a twin choke cable system devised by the late Mick Miller some years ago.

The system works well, and does not need that much pull on the choke to operate. You could try Sue Miller to see if there are still some around...

Following up on an old thread:

I have a `72 Sprint with Strombergs. Engine starts and runs fine when warm, or if it is cold PROVIDED it has been started within the last 2 weeks or so. But after sitting for 2 weeks, it refuses to start without starting fluid (ether). Seems like fuel is evaporating from the bowls. So I added an electric fuel pump to fill the bowls before cranking but still no luck. There is good spark. I see in the manual that Strombergs had a choke cable running to each carb, but mine only has one, which doesn't help it start at all. Has anyone had luck fixing a cold start problem with dual chokes?

Tom, my TC Europa which I think youve seen has only one connected and starts fine on 2 cylinders for a few seconds or so then the other 2 chime in. I tried connecti g both but the pull was too heavy.
Id try cleaning the carbs and making sure the "choke" is actually working.

As I mentioned above in that long ago post I have separate cables going to the choke mechanism on each carb but in truth the one for the front carb hardly ever gets used. One choke is enough to start the car in the coldest weather I ever use it in - as long as I'm using the car regularly. What does cause starting problems is lack of use.

When it comes to starting after a period of non use (even a couple of weeks) it can be a struggle. I have an electric pump and you can hear it pumping fuel somewhere for a few seconds after you switch on. I always assumed it was going into the float bowls but I also have a pressure regulator (Filter King type) in the line between the pump and the carbs. Frustrated with cold start issues recently I reduced the pressure setting on the regulator and heard the pump start as normal, stop for a few seconds and then start again. The car then started easily. I wondered whether the pump was pressurising the line as far as the regulator but with little getting past to the carbs - until I reduced the setting. I don't have a gauge so I don't know what the actual setting is but I'm tempted to bypass the regulator for a while to see if that improves things.

Thanks for the replies! I'll check to be sure my chokes...er...choke is clean and that the fuel bowl is actually getting filled up by the electric pump.
