fitting fuel tank

Hi Folks
Getting ready to fit he fuel tank back in the +2

cant remember do the straps that hold the tank go over only the tank or do they go over the cross member and then pull it to the tank to the cross member? I seem to recall that they only go over the tank but that presumes the PO had put the straps on correctly.

Not wishing to add to the confusion but........
I installed a new tank in my Plus 2 last year. The car is just back from a full respray at Matty's and I have been advised by their workshop that the straps should go over the cross brace. (gives the tank some sort of anchorage).
I had fitted them to go between tank and crossbrace which appeared a neater fit but wrong apparently.

Hi both

Just to finish off this post. Have now fitted the tank and have put the straps over the rear brace strut as well. I am fitting fuel injection and am using the Spyder wooden battons to lift the tank up a tad so modified the straps by brazing in an extra 3" of steel strap then covered the whole strap with heat shrink sleeving.

Placing the strap around the rear cross brace is surprising to me. It is certainly counter intuitive but that does not mean it is incorrect. I had a custom fuel tank made by Axminster Specialist Panels in UK. A wonderful job. When I fit the tank with their new stainless straps the straps were too long. I attributed this to the fact that the tank was made to custom dimensions and shorter than standard. I lowered the height a bit to allow room for the fuel/air discriminators attached on top. Axminster supplied shorter straps.



I have scoured my photo gallery and I was unable to find a view that showed my +2 fuel tank prior to disassembly.

The workshop manual (section L page 5) shows the straps going around the tank only. No mention in the text of the straps passing over the brace.

If the straps are long enough to go over the brace would they not be too long to go around the tank only?

Hi Folks

Like the above post I was not sure whether the straps went over the tank and brace. But the wooden batons lift the tank a bit and the strap do fit quite nicely over the brace as well. As I said I had to extend them bit by brazing in and extra 3" or so of strap and then covered the whole of the top strap with heat shrink sleeving made a nice finish.

If the tank were the standard one (which mine is) and it was set in without the batons i.e as standard I think its top face is just below the cross brace so fit may not be as tight.

Hi Bob,

I fitted my tank (standard) last week and had the straps going over the rear brace. Looking at the fit I think the straps would have been to long if I had not. The tank though is secure and does not move in any direction so I am happy.
