Airbox gasket sealing backplate and cover

Elan Sprint: I am looking for the correct version of gasket for the air box for Elan sprint/weber version in order to seal the airbox from leak of oil/fuel. I also have seen around that sometimes the cover is fixed by one bolt or two bolt or three bolts. Which is the right version.

Try the rocker cover gasket off a an early "K" series Toyota Corolla engine....almost a perfect fit, and only about $20.00.

Hi Umberto,
The carb backplate on my engine has mountings for two bolt fixings. Not sure if that is what they should or should not be.
Gasket wise... I produced a good (approx 5mm dia) 'bead of silicone around the perimeter of the backplate where the cover sits against. I used black which is the same colour as the airbox and backplate. I then left this for about a week to dry out then fitted the cover onto the new rubber gasket. This has worked very well so far, and looks to be going to last quite well too.

I made sure the backplate was spotless clean before applying/producing the rubber bead with a standard silicone applicator 'gun'
The backplate was held lightly in my workshop vice at the time. Not on the car. :wink:

Rocker box...Tappet cover... they all mean the same Umberto. The Gasket from the early toyota corolla works a treat, and
it is black colour also.

Yes Umberto it's what we call the Cylinder Head Cover Gasket in Europe.
" Dichtung f?r Zylinderkopfdeckel" or could even be "Zylinderkopfhaubedichtung" in the Wonder World of German :lol:

Not sure what the correct Lotus item for this is, but I used a U shaped rubber 'extrusion'.
I cant remember where I got it from but it could have been this from Woolies.

Heat gun to the right shape the glued in.
Again - not what the 'correct' thing should be but worked for me.

Years ago, I bought a cork gasket from my friendly Lotus dealer for the air box on my Sprint (3 bolts). When I asked a 'specialist' a couple of years ago I was told that gaskets had never been fitted?? The Corolla option sounds like it's worth trying.
I tried some stick backed foam (draft excluder) once but it dissolved in the petrol fumes :oops:

Hello Umberto

Just a follow-up to ceejay's comment re the Corolla rocker/tappet cover gasket. I installed a Corolla gasket several years ago - great fit and no oil leak problems.

The supplier's site in Australia (www,acl.com.au) tells me that the part 'Valve Cover Gasket: JM025EZ' is used for the following Toyota versions:
Toyota 2K 993cc Inline4 OHV 2v; Toyota 3K 1166cc Inline4 OHV 2v; Toyota 4K 1290cc Inline4 OHV 2v; Toyota 4K-C 1290cc Inline4 OHV 2v; Toyota 5K 1486cc Inline4 OHV 2v and Toyota 7K-E 1762cc Inline4.

I dont know the exact change over dates but they roughly went as follows with the number of bolts
Also some subtle shape variations within the 3 main versions -there was some posts on this about a year ago

1 bolt - early S1 /S2
2 bolt - S3 / S4 and Plus 2S
3 bolt - Sprint and Plus 2 S 130

Sorry to veer off topic but all +2 backplates are three-bolt-closure with the airbox. Both the back plate and airbox for the +2 have 050-prefix part numbers and are shaped differently for those for the Elan.

Hello,

a question regarding the correct position and size of the air box cover for backplate for weber:
I have two airbox cover.
(N.1) was with the car, dameged and I rebuilt the nose tube by fiberglass where I personalized the size.
The second one (N.2) I bought used on ebay.
Both of them, but more the N.2, are not fitting well remaining too high and without going under the body.
The trunking paper tube to the air case filter doesn't fit easly or for nothing becouse the nose of the cover is not in line with the trunking tube.
See some pictures.
I saw many pictures of elan sprint where the cover looks with a different shape and more round nose going down, under the body.
I suspect something is wrong on mine or they are not the right cover box but I don't know what and why exactly.

Or do I have to cut the nose and resized by fiberglass in order to adjust case by case, car by car?
Or my engine is too hight on the carburettor side?
Or...??? Thank you for any dvise.

Umberto,

Your no 2 airbox is for a +2 and your no1 is just plain wrong shape to fit. I may have a correct cover spare, I shall look tomorrow and let you know.

Just to confuse things, my early +2 has a one bolt cover.... Where is that from?
