Lotus Elan

Front Left (I think) Brake Calliper Needed!

PostPost by: DreamsOfA26R » Thu Dec 07, 2023 4:16 pm

Hello all!

I’m now getting around to fixing the braking system and in the myriad of parts that came with the basket case of a project I picked up, I only have 3/4 brake callipers! I have both rears and what I Believe is the front right, but it appears I’m missing the front left. Attached are some pictures of what I do have.

Does anyone have a side input front left calliper I may purchase? I plan on having all the callipers rebuilt so I don’t need one in immaculate condition, just something that’s at least rebuildable.

There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

That is a Type 12 Girling caliper. It is an earlier version used on the early cars. I am not sure if you can upgrade to the 14LF, but it might be easier as they are available new (as a repop).

Hi
That is a type 14 caliper as it is a 3 bolt design, type 12 is a two bolt design and were removed from service because they were not considered strong enough.
Early S1 would have had type 12 but as they were returned in to the service exchange scheme they were replaced with Type 14 calipers.

Regards
Steve

One quick way to know which side calipers fit is that the bleed valve usually sits at the top when the caliper is mounted, this enables air to mrise up to the bleed valve
