Lotus Elan

Cylinder block wanted

PostPost by: Pastapesto » Tue Apr 06, 2021 10:28 pm

I am having an engine rebuilt and have recently found out from the very experienced engine builder that the block is not fit for purpose, as they say!
Would anyone have a very nice block for a '67/'68 mk2 engine that Is for sale? Probably best if it is in the UK because of the shipping/carriage costs.....

Thanks for any help offered.

All the best

I think you're right Bill but I really wanted a block from the right period of say 67' - 68' really.... Am I correct in saying I need a 681F??? Or a 6015 block? Is that the type I need for that period? Anyone?..... The new cast blocks from Ford are the later 701M type iirc,????? I also think QED do a new 681F but I think from memory that the price is a little out of my price range....
Thanks for the reply Bill.....

You can always grind off the casting type number to make it the way Lotus used to do it back then and it does not matter really what block you start with as only an expert can tell the the difference on the various block versions based on their external fine casting details. 6015 was the Ford number for a block and all the versions started with 6015 and then the type number e.g. 120E, 681F, 701M and a few others and Lotus would grind of the numbers after 6015 around 65 to 68.

cheers

Just curious, did they grind the numbers off for lightness or was it clearance problems?
We are supposed to be having fun, are we not?

I am curious to know why the block has been written off, but only if you don`t mind telling us.

I have a few blocks I'd part with from that time frame, I think it would be a 2731 block. My pal has several of both that number and the 701 type. All decent shape but in the u.s.a. Shipping wont be cheap. I've got one that's bored .044 over, that one would be relatively cheap. Also got some type 711 crossflow blocks available. Been in this hobby too long..

One is complete with, crank, rods and pistons and the other engine is complete including head, less carbs, distributor, cam cover and flywheel. Running well when removed.

PM me if interested. D

Hi David

I did PM you earlier about them, did you receive my PM? I haven't seen a reply from you yet! Was just wondering if you received it?

Thanks
