Quality headlamps wanted

PostPost by: NYK » Thu Jul 09, 2020 11:25 am

I recently bought a pair of headlamps from Paul Matty as part of my Plus 2 restoration. They arrived and on inspection were really the biggest pile of s**t imaginable. Firstly they rattled, the lens/reflector moved in and out by about ¼ inch. Spoke to PM and they said their workshop used pieces of adhesive foam to take up the slack. Was not very happy but did as they suggested. Next I find that the grommet on the bowl is a loose fit and the plastic sleeving that carries the wires is just poked into this, so not waterproof. I used some sikaflex to achieve a proper seal. I then got around to fitting the unit, could not understand why it rocked against the face of the pod, that was down to the rim retention clip at the bottom of the bowl, it’s fixing massively stuck out the back of bowl mounting flange preventing the bowl from fitting flush. As for the bowl mounting gasket this seemed to be too large a diameter such that you would see it protrude over the top of the pod. It also seems that the manufacturer has gone out of their way to make every edge razor sharp, the scratch on my pod is testament to that!
PM have to their credit agreed a full refund, but the question is where can I buy a decent unit from as my guess is that I will get similar from other suppliers.

You might even consider the plastic bowl they sell to avoid sharp edges?

I have used two sets of Wipac Quadoptics in my last two cars, very good quality, NOS off Ebay, and much better light than the originals. One set £20, the other was £23.95.
They've gone up a bit now, but you can still get them for about £36. a pair, with or without the hole for the side lamp.

They're still in production so no need to search for NOS.
Vast improvement - so bright that retroflecivity from low set road signs and eye height relative to lights can cause glare!
