Lotus Elan

1970 S4 ashtray

PostPost by: roebuck » Wed Apr 15, 2020 9:36 am

I think I may be out of luck.
After over 2 years restoration the car is being put back together and I find the the restorer has misplaced the entire Ashtray.
Any ideas as I can not find one in Australia or on any of the UK part sites.
fingers crossed
Rob

I've got one here is the US if interested, can take a pix later if needed. Spoke too soon, have just the tray itself, not the enclosure/cavity.

Hi Rob,

you could try e-mailing Horopito Motors in New Zealand (search the name and their web page will come up). They are a very large wreckers yard specializing in older cars, 1920's to 70's according to their website. They were somewhat famous in NZ in the '80's as the setting for the Smash Palace movie and also had a bit part in the original Goodbye Pork Pie movie, and then were the focus of a reality TV series for a short while as well.

A number of years ago I needed an ashtray for my Elan S3, and I sent them the photo from Brian Buckland's book and asked if they could find one for me. They found one pretty quickly and sent it through to me for a reasonable price. They did state that it was from a Vauxhall, whereas most sources suggest it is from an Austin, so it was probably used in multiple vehicles. No guarantees that they will find you one, but may be worth a shot.

p.s.
just found that there was actually a write-up in carandclassic about Horopito motors:
