Bolt securing back timing chest plate

PostPost by: EricB » Mon Aug 19, 2024 2:31 pm

As I see it, with the 1/4" UNC x 3/4" long bolt, I can either use a flat washer and lock washer or flat washer and Blue Loctite or flat washer and Never Seize.

Comments, pls.

They usually use a spring washer.

Yes from factory they use a spring washer. I normally keep the spring washer and use a drop of blue loctite as well. If that bolt falls out it can do a lot of damage. Make sure you tighten it to correct specs.

Thanks, guys. I guess one can get paranoid about that bolt getting loose or the spring washer breaking up. I found some grade 5 ones at my local bolt supplier. Will go the spring washer and loctite route.

That is a sensible course of action. I do likewise after buying a box of quality spring washers a few years ago and for some reason, I had recourse to undo the bolt again, only to find the spring washer in two pieces!

I started using metric, what I call "wavey" washers in place of spring washers years ago. I like them because the do not dig in to what is being fastened, yet provide a secure coupling.

That's a good suggestion. I have always worried about lock washers in a blind area.

I think i prefer a spring washer that digs in to be sure it doesn't come loose
