Dipstick arrgghhh!

Checked the oil as usual, topped up, replaced the oil cap and set off on 50 mile journey. New rattle somewhere up front, but hey, that’s common.
Open dipstick tube makes a real oily mess. Rattle was the dipstick resting on the cam cover

an old spark plug boot slides right on the dipstick and then over the tube to address the mess!

Indeed, provided I replace the dipstick in this tube before driving off

Things like that are easily done.

I left the oil cap off my daily after its last oil change, made a big mess but caught it before oil got too low. It did cause a few short term reliability gremlims as oil got into the engine wiring.

Senior moment. I have them more often lately. Best one is putting stuff down and then spending 10 minutes looking for it. :D

Hi

Easily done. At least you did not loose the dipstick.

My dad made that mistake once with an Alfa Romeo which was his daily car at the time. No electrical issues but he was cleaning-up oil for months, especially that which had been absorbed I to the underbonnet insulation then slowly seeped out toward gravity.

Another thing from my dad, off-topic except to the quote above but interesting. Dad was a psychologist and had read some research that claims that there's not really any such thing as the 'senior moment.' The research postulated that we do not actually become more forgetful with age, rather we just notice it more, which is totally natural as our self-perception changes with age. He once described this to auch-older gent he knew who got a wistful grin and replied, "come to think of it, I HAVE always been this way!"

You should consider a BMW motorbike instead of a car. Mine (2012 R1200GS) has a sight-glass for checking the oil level and as yet NOTHING has leaked ever.

Might be tricky for transporting my two kids. BMW car and bike must be developed by completely different parts of the company as my car like to leak multiple fluids (oil, power steering and coolant).

I have found any number of tools lying on the street. Once I found an especially nice pair of Wilkinson pruning shears. Unfortunately they had been run-over already and damaged and more unfortunately already belonged to me! :(

Pretty much. Upper management has tried to get some integration between the two divisions, but it has never really taken, thank goodness.
