Ugly tail pipe

PostPost by: BRGS » Sun Sep 19, 2021 10:00 am

Maybe this should be in the exhaust forum but it’s not really technical.

The back end of my plus 2 is a beautiful thing, except for the ugly muffler and bracket at the back. This could well be factory but it’s not a thing of beauty. The exhaust works fine and no issues with noise so I don’t want to make a big change to a straight through SS exhaust as it will
affect the tuning.

Anyway just checking to see what other people’s plus 2 tail pipes are like and to see if I can copy a better set up.

Please do share a pic if you have something better

No blue twin pipe push on trims from China.

Thanks

Jim

I don’t know if your set up is standard but imho it would be improved by a stainless back box and a stainless or chromed bracket.

Hi

I know what you mean about some of the original boxes like yours. Not exactly in keeping with the elegance of the rest of the car.

I am currently in negotiations (fingers crossed) for a car with a rear box arrangement like this. Its an early car that used to be raced, so the arrangement is to comply with track noise regulations.

Hi,
here's a pic of mine with a stainless back box, from SJS. Think it is a little bit louder than standard, but not significantly.
It does stick out a little bit further than the rear bumper which is a bit annoying... (can't really tell from the pictures...)

Cheers, Matt.

I reckon if you straighten it up and give the bracket some curves instead of guillotine edges it will look as good as Matt's. A simple chromed pipe like the early Elans have would draw the eye.

Edit: OMG it's a S130 (your earlier post). I couldn't stand the noise 40 years ago so what Matt's sounds like I don't like to think!

Hi

I agree, straighten it up for sure, and if possible devise a more elegant mounting and you are done.

And it looks like I may be getting the car with the strange exhaust.

You might consider a high temperature satin black paint for the whole unit. Instead of drawing attention to the silencer, bracket, and tip, just let them all visually recede under the car. Maybe add a tasteful short tip in stainless which would be the only thing really visible.

Unless you have a good looking stainless exhaust system, why not try to otherwise minimize its visual impact.

Here is how I covered an ugly tail pipe on my daily driver. I made a carbon fiber exhaust tip (homemade from dry carbon cloth/epoxy wrapped around a pair of PVC pipes as a temporary male mold).

Jim, this is what I have. I suspect it's stock but can't say for sure. Also not the prettiest but it'll do for now. Full system replacement is in the future but a low priority.

The oval box with the outlet in the centre is what is generally available now, never seen the one like Jim's with the outlet to one side.

Probably irrelevant as they are no longer available but mine's a Peco from the last years of production:

I think the side outlet pipe was fitted to very early +2's and *probably* used the baby s3 elan rear box. (Guess!)

I agree, the rear mount on the central exhaust box is the worst feature of the car, but I have not yet come up with improved method to hold it securely. Open to suggestions!

This thread spurred me on so I did do the high temperature black and looks much better I think, I have had mine for a long time and it came with the chrome tip which also looks a little better, Gordon
