Can't separate engine from transmission

PostPost by: NWElan » Sat Sep 05, 2020 8:08 am

Hello All,

I'm in the process of pulling the engine from my Elan S3. I've got the engine mounts removed, the clutch housing supported, the engine on a hoist, and the six bolts connecting the engine to the clutch housing removed.

I've managed to separate the engine from the clutch housing by about 1" but they won't separate anymore. The engine rotates and wiggles relative to the clutch housing but something is hung up.

I hope some people have had similar experience and found solutions.

Thank you.

Have you removed the bottom section of the sandwich plate ?

It's bolted to the flange of the bellhousing with two 1/4" UNC bolts.

Thank you all for the replies.

I re-looked at the sandwich plate and noted a third 1/4" bolt at the upper left side holding it to the clutch housing.

The engine separated after removing the bolt.

Thank you again.
