Plus 2 engine too high

Hi

I have a problem with the engine in my plus 2. When I installed my engine. The engine is too high. I check the engine mounts (are new) and there are correct.
Where is the problem?

Why do you say the engine is too high? The exhaust side mounting looks correct, can?t see the other side clearly enough to be sure on that one. Is the front of the cam cover touching the bonnet? What clearance do you have between the carb intake box and the inner wing? Have you got the correct spacers under the rear gearbox mount to raise the rear of the gearbox, which in turn drops the front of the engine? Does your engine have Weber or Stomburg carbs, there?s a different mount on the carb side to ensure there is clearance for the Webers.
Sorry, more questions than answers, but hopefully gives you more things to check.

Hi mate

Not on a Plus Two. Only on the Elan! On a Plus Two, both engine mounts should be the ?lower? Ford ones, not the higher Lotus ones.

I believe???????

It?s very late, and I?d have to go to the garage to be sure, but aren?t those both the higher (wrong?) Lotus mounts??

BTW... Ask me how I know? In answer, I would have to explain that someone should tell Spydercars that little nugget!

Mine needs a Ford one on the exhaust side and a Lotus one on the carb side, see photos, one is with two ford mounts and the intake box was too close to the inner arch and could hit when the engine rocked under power on/off situations, the addition of the Lotus on raised that side a small amount, just enough to get rid of that problem.
My understanding is that the Ford mount has curved sides on the engine side flange whereas the Lotus ones have straight sides, hence I believe the exhaust side one in the first pictures is a standard Ford one

Hi mate.

As I said, the Plus Two, (Webber?s or Stromberg) never needed a ?high lift? mount under the carbs. The footwell/inner arch is a different shape to the Elan. On mine, Spyder?s fitting of one meant the front of my cam cover was in constant contact with the bonnet. But if your setup works for you, then it?s all good.

Did you make Tealby last Thursday?

Edited to add: I think you are correct about the OP?s mounts. Without going into the garage to check, they probably are the Ford ones? Certainly on the exhaust side. But the carb side????

Wonder where he sourced his mounts from?

Just a further comment, there are engine mounts out there that are advertised with different heights and I?ve seen comments in other threads on here that some Spyder chassis require different height mounts. My experience is with an early Spyder sheet metal chassis.

Didn?t make it to Tealby, on holiday!

Yes. I think the Spyder chassis are different. Mine?s a Lotus Replacement Chassis. If you look on the rdent illustrated parts catalogue. There?s only one part number for the Plus Two engine mounts. But on the Elan page there are part numbers for LH and RH mounts.

Maybe next month then?

Cheers

Just had another thought, if it?s bonnet to cam cover interference that?s the problem. On the bonnet metal hinge frame, there is a funny little L shaped slotted bracket attached where the bonnet springs attach. This can be used to effectively jack up the centre of the bonnet at the front so it clears the cam cover and aligns the front edge of the bonnet correctly with the front nose cone section. Again there is a thread somewhere on here about this bracket and it?s intended purpose.

Think I?m away for next months meeting too

Cheers

Simon

Or Body too low when assembled to Chassis, no Shims. Clearance from under Bonnet to Camcover.

Worth you reading the similar thread that is ongoing at present about the engine canting to the side. It?s got good pictures and info on types of mounting and also the gearbox mounting spacers.

I put a new chassis from TTR. Is a stock chassis with 26r upgrade.
I bought also the engine mounts in TTR. Is posible that the body is to low respect the chassis? Where can I see if this is the problem?

Use Plastercine/Modling Clay and measure between Top Front Camcover and underside of the Bonnet when it is closed.
If it touches the underside of Bonnet you need to remove Screws holding Body to Chassis. Fit Shims between Chassis Flange each side and Body.

I suggest you fit the Bonnet and check clearance when closed using plastercine/modling clay
