Difference of Elan and Cortina manifolds/headers

I bought a second hand 4-2-1 manifold from a forum member but when fitting it the exit pipes seemed to point slightly downwards and I to strain all the pipes into the Y-piece to align it with the tail pipe. I believe this tension is making the whole car noisy and vibrate as was the case with a harsh FHC someone once asked me to assess.

I seem to remember seeing, but can't find, an item saying that the Lotus Cortina manifold was slightly different so do I have a manifold from a Cortina?

The Cortina exhaust manifolds I have seen are very difference to an Elan's due to the larger gap between engine and body on a Cortina. This enable the 4 pipes to come out and flow back and down with more gentle bends than required by the tight gap between the block and sub frame on an Elan.

A Cortina exhaust would not fit in an Elan.

Thanks as always, Rohan, that seems rather obvious now!

I wonder if it was the Europa TC that was different.

The reason for the exhaust droop has become clear: the gearbox mount has perished and so the whole power plant is tilted!

St Wilkins will have a replacement in a month (it's the early type) but meanwhile I've stuffed in some old bits of rubber to hold the gearbox off the chassis where it was graunching.

If I recall correctly TTR do a conversion bracket to fit the later style gear box support to the early arrangement.

For what its worth

As the last one must have been fitted in 1990 I guess I'll not bother; but thanks.
