the "well done" (by a young (40) ) backplate fixture showed a) a partially wet (water) gasket. b) a delaminated area where there was no adhes?on between gasket and rtv and no rtv on the backplate surface: maybe jetted away by water circulation in the area? WHERE the actual leak is, is hard to determine: the pump housing area also got wet! .......any ideas fellas???? sandy ----- PS QED parts got lost somewheres, 2nd chance on the way?!

if there were new parts in that area (backplate ...), you may want to check their planeity before reassembly with high specs jointing compound (not plain silcone)...

Looks like this thread got lifted from the middle of some other thread

it is almost impossible to tell what you are talking bout.

Coolant leak?
maybe timing chest backing plate?

Check flatness of said timing chest backing plate.

I am not sure the backing plate to block surface is a big leak area.

More likely the orings at the water pump.

I doubt the surface requires full contact

If that is what you are talking about, a but cryptic

In the centre around where the Water Pump slides in there is a machined landing with a hole. This hole transfers coolant to the front cover. Many times the leak is here and coolant then drips down into the Sump.

The other thing to check is that the back plate is not being held of the block front face by the oil gallery plug that fits in a recess in the back plate

I would also use Loctite Aviation Gasket Cement on both sides the paper gasket between the back plate and block face not 3 Bond RTV. There is a small oil passage in the back plate for chain lubrication and using RTV risks blocking that.

cheers
Rohan
