LF12759LBA

Can anyone tell me what this twin cam engine number indicates? It has a Stromberg head and came with an Elan SE, 1970.

Thank you.

Engine No 12759 dates from mid 1968.

LF stood for Lotus Ford and was a Lotus Cortina Mk II prefix, LP for Lotus Power being the usual Elan prefix at that time.

LBA gives a (rough) indication of cylinder bore casting thickness in the block.

I am not sure any Lotus Cortina's had the Stromberg head; perhaps late Federal versions did: Mark? If not, I would assume that the block and head in the Elan you refer to come from different sources.

Thanks Tim.

So the number clearly differentiates it from the +2 LF engines during May 67 to Sep 67.

No Stromberg heads on Cortinas or Escorts. I have seen them with LP as well, although most seem to be LF when fitted to the Ford. I would guess that a knackered Weber head was replaced with a Stromberg at some time when fitted to an Elan.

That engine number is not recorded against an Elan or +2 in my records. With the LF prefix that led to my presumption that it came from a Lotus Cortina.

Yes indeed, a Cortina! Sorry Tim my sentence wasn't too clear. I meant that it was probably fitted with a Stromberg head once it had found it's way into an Elan. I don't think that many of the Ford guys even know about the Stromberg head!
