To activate the heater in my S4 FHC - do I have to pull or to push the heater knob? Anyway, I have the impression that the heating system is working constantly - ist very hot inside the cabin... the dashboard ist in total very hot too...

I add a picture from the heating valve - is this position closed or open??

it's opened, it's a valve and the closing part is now away from the opening. You also can see that the actuation lever, which is underneath, is like it's in a "pulled" position, which normally corresponds to the dash knon away from the dash (closed is knob against the dash).

Agree with above, that is open - knob pulled. Push the knob to close.

The valves are oten a bit stiff and need direct 'help' to close as the wire isn't stiff enough.
Depending on how often you want to operate the valve it may be worth taking apart and fettling to make smoother.

If I push my heater closed, it slowly re-opens which I wonder is down to water pressure. Any suggestions as to how I keep it fixed in position - regardless of what that position is ?

Yes a twist is supposed to lock the position of the knob stem.

I had the same problem with the temperature control knob creeping out from the dash on my S2. I first thought the fact that the length of the original wire was too short. So, I tried several mods to the knobs shaft, first by replacing the original wire with a longer one, when that didn't work, I then tried increasing the diameter of the wire that operates the water valve. None of these changes seemed to fix the problem, as it continued to creep out, and the increased wire diameter just made it harder to push in and pull out. I know have a large collection of different diameters of music wire. What I found was the valve needed a bit of tweaking in the alignment of the wire to the operating lever. Most of the replacement water valves do not align correctly. I had replaced the valve when the original diaphragm ruptured while in the middle of no where. By adjusting the alignment , I was able to reduce the music wire diameter and the knob no longer creeps out.
