Dear All

Just received a waterpump seal,off Fleabay and despite the usual stockists not stocking them on their own , just as part of the full kit , it looks like it will work...I just don't have an engine to try it on now...

Anyone fancy a go?

Unless you have a perfect surface finish on the iron impeller then you?re waiting your time.
Replacement kits from QED have a ceramic ? washer? that gives carbon to ceramic running surface.
FWIW.

Normally the bearing will have been destroyed or on the point of failing with the water having run through it, my engine only gets started every 5 or 7 years, run up to temp on new o?l and coolant and then mothballed again, last time there was a water pump leak when at full operating temp but it has probably only run like that for 15 minutes.

I will take a chance, it will only get used if I recommission it to moving and stopping Under its own power to sell as a rolling restoration, otherwise if i do a full rebuild then I will replace the whole thing.

Just seen the overlapping posting, I may have to reface the impellor on my lathe.

Yes, but if you just need to replace the sprung seal/ceramic,these will do that,with no need for the cup/spacer..

Sounds good in theory, reface impeller, ever tried to get an old one off the shaft. Usual method crack off with chisel.

They should come off unbroken if you can put the shaft in a big vice so that the jaws are just clear of the shaft and the flat forward-facing surface is supported by the top face of the vice.

Then tap the shaft down and out with a drift rod a bit narrower than the waterpump shaft.

.. or put the pump spindle in the chuck jaws and re-face the impeller ?

You sometimes need to get an old impeller off its shaft, when you pushed the new one too far down its new shaft and then broke it trying to pull it back to its proper clearance.

?57.60 including delivery to me so yes, I am completely serious.

Also I dont believe in replacing perfectly servicable components with often inferior parts made by companies with no perception of tol?rances and/or limits and fits just because they are shiny and new.

Its unlikely that seal I bought is new old stock but if it is or even if its OE (for what little that phrase is worth today) then I will be stoked.

And its not just a case of saving money because I would pay 10 times the current selling price for driveshaft doughnuts for original new old stock.

Even with delivery this seal has cost me next to nothing, when I dismantle the pump I will know if it is going to do the job, plenty of new kits have failed straight away.

Well,the last three were sold today,so let's wait for some feedback?

Anyone tried using a QED kit in the Burton modular water pump? The Burton kit supplied with their modular pump does not have the ceramic washer. The QED kit seems better quality but don't know if it will fit the Burton pump.
