Elan Sprint Engine mounts - AGAIN Sorry

Hello Chaps,
I know, I know, its all been thrashed through before, but ive just gotta ask.......
What is the current wisdom as to the best source of quality original style engine mounts?
Has anyone used the "race" mounts available from Kelsport or TTR in a standard road going Sprint, if so what are their experiences?
I realise that there is a significant price hike for these "race" mounts but, if the reduced logevity of the standard mounts are taken into account.........
regards
Bob

I've just replaced the mount on the carb side, the second time in only 2 years, with an extra robust one from SJ Sportscars. These have the void space that is usually found in standard ones filled with the same hard rubber as the rest of the mount. They were a bit more expensive than the standard ones, ?37 including delivery and Vat, but I'm hoping they're going to last longer than the cr*p that the last two were. Only time will tell, but Steve assured me they were far superior to the cheaper alternatives.

Sounds like you're beginning to doubt the dimensions of your current mounts?
That's what I'd check first before launching into race grade mounts and dropping of the originality wagon.
I'd be inclined to talk to Susan Miller as she does keep old stock for pattern.

I have a Cosworth engine which needs to mount a bit lower in the chassis. On my first frame 20 years ago I modified and rewelded the engine mount bracket on the chassis, lowering the mounting points so I could use the standard mounts. However, I then got a TTR frame and didn't want to bodge it, so I decided to redo the mounts. Some measurements, old mounts, a simple jig made from slotted pieces of polyethylene, and urethane (plus surface primer) from McMaster-Carr led to the correct mounts. They're in the car and look good but I've not run it yet so we'll see how it goes. Very easy to try again if it's too hard or delaminates.

OK.
I was advised by TTR that the racing engine mounts would be too harsh in a road going regular use Sprint. So I'm going for the standard "uprated" version. I'll dimensionally check these when they arrive and compare them with the existing 40 odd year old ones I have at the moment.

I see that Kelvedon sell two versions:

This one seems to be aimed at road cars:

It certainly would be interesting to hear peoples experience.

Please ignore my post as that's the version being referred to in the beginning.

Sorry

I've used the Kelsport Group 4 type mounts on my 26R and will not use them again as I had harsh vibrations through the car. We also had to be very careful with bock to mount clearance to fit it without loading the chassis, due to lack of compliance.

We'll be modifying it and with a leaf spring shackle bush (Holden) which is what many of the open wheels used in period here in Australia. An alternative give space is to try one one the inner rear std wishbone bushes.

Cheers

Hello all,

I got bored replacing exhaust side mounts, the carb side has been on the car for six or seven years or more, and I have fitted a TTR mount to the exhaust side only. It tightens things up but isn't too harsh, I expected the carb side to deteriorate rapidly but it's lasted a couple of years so far and isn't sagging. I just felt that a pair of uprated mounts would be too harsh.

Cheers,

Ian
PS expecting a load of "that's not a good idea because" ..... :D

I take it that that was a TTR uprated standard mount, not the racing variety???

Hopefully I haven't replied three times, a bit of an internet problem this evening!

Yes they were just the "standard" uprated mounts not the racing variety and seem to work very well. Well one adds a bit of tightness without creating any harshness.

Cheers,

Ian
