New Starter Brushes

Has anyone put new brushes on the the windings on a Lucas starter ? I tried soldering but the solder would never stick. It seems that the winding is aluminum and originals were spot welded in place.

Any suggestions?

In the past I've successfully replaced these by leaving a short length of the original brushes braid still attached to the field coil and then soldering the new brushes to the stub of the old braid.
