thanks for the comments....the 'power to coil' warning light will hopefully pick up something like you suggest [I have a normal starter motor]..
and yes I had considered replacing the ignition switch...

well guys.....latest episode.....hopefully last!!!

with the aid of a 'power to coil' warning light [thanks again for the tip eric] and a spark plug tester, traced the fault to.......COIL!!!

I had replaced the old dodgy coil with a new [now discovered to be also dodgy] one about 6 months ago...... :evil:

moral of this story; even with a brand new out-of-the -box item, you cannot assume that it is in perfect working order!!!

advance new year's resolution....carry a spare [known to work] coil....
