Mind you it would have been safer if you could have found some mild steel square stock instread of a square file.

File metal is quite brittle and can't take much twist torque, as I know to my cost. :(

The only improvement to your method would would be to use a TRX-Spline bit.

Yes they make great extractors because you can really bo****ks them in with a lump hammer, they sort of broach their own mating splines, far more effective even than the proper tapered square fluted stud extractors.
