Full Depth Air Box Cover

PostPost by: Certified Lotus » Mon Nov 28, 2016 12:11 pm

Nicely done, but that won't fit an S1 as the intake will be too close to the body and you can't close the bonnet. Seems most of the custom made air boxes are not designed for an early S1 as they have the wrong depth at the intake to clear the engine bay wall with enough space for the bonnet lip to clear.

One day I will find one that fits..........

Indeed, which is why it may be best to make one yourself based upon actual measurements taken from your car

I've been thinking that but I know that a few people have made fiberglass molds for the proper size and I'm waiting for one of them to make a few more.

I had an email exchange with Dave last night and he told me he has produced a modified version to fit the earlier cars as a result of dimensions provided by somebody on the forum.

I like the look/sound of this but I am a long way away and would prefer somebody in the UK to confirm this will fit an S2 :D

The email address is howsam2 'at hotmail dot com

I noticed that 7skypilot said that it fitted his S3 with no problems--is there a difference between S2 and S3 bonnets/openings does anybody know?

I don't know about an S3 but there is clearly more room in the S4 vs an S1. I emailed Dave to see what he would make.

May I confirm that the airbox I received from Dave was for my S4 (not S3) and that it fits perfectly. Sprint and Plus 2 are similar and I would suggest the airbox also fits these perfectly. My engine installation is standard.

The backplate of the S4 is the later 'square' type. Dave's airbox is of a far higher quality than my original and there are no fitting problems at all, with plenty of clearance (as measured with copious quantities of BluTac) between airbox and bonnet. As I mentioned in a previous post, even with the engine idling at a lumpy 600rpm there is no sign of limited clearance anywhere.

I really recommend this airbox - it fits the S4 Elan, increases the clearance for #4 trumpet and is a superb product in every way!

I have no connection with Dave, other than as a satisfied customer.

I can confirm the excellent build quality of Dave's airboxes but FWIW the box he made for me wouldn't fit in my S3 - it fouled at the front section at the top of the "tube".
I went with a standard square backing plate and airbox from Paul marty in the end.

I have just received a full depth airbox from Dave mentioned above for my Plus 2. He makes to order in a week. It is very well made, with a better finish than the original.
He can also make these for the S4/Sprint and asks me to mention that if anyone wishes to lend an original from an S1,S2,S3 for him to make a mould, in exchange for a full depth box, he could offer these also.

Has anybody else had luck with Dave? I am not getting a response from him.

Try contacting him direct on: [email protected]

Again, the airbox fits my S4, with a standard engine installation, perfectly with plenty of clearance. It is of superb quality and way better than any other deeper boxes on the market.

I finally was able to source a full depth airbox that fits an S1 ! Metal backing plate with fiberglass airbox. Very nicely made. No problems clearing the bonnet edge at the air intake location.

It only took 2 years and multiple acquisitions of many different airboxes to get here. Dave Vegher at Veloce Motors West makes these (slowly). Thanks to Naury who lead me to Dave.

I talked to Dave Vegher and he said that the guy who made that ^ airbox has retired and now he has nobody to do it!

I was in touch with "Dave" in the UK several months ago and I thought he would make one but he no longer responds to emails or phone calls...

Reading what was said earlier in the thread it seems that Dave needs an S2 airbox so he can copy the dimensions---Can somebody in the UK loan him one? It seems to be implied that he will provide a cold air box to the loaner . I
