Full Depth Air Box Cover

I know a few people on here are considering different air boxes.

Dave made one of these for me last month and I'm very happy with it. Here he is selling one on eBay. I had to buy a later shape "square" backing plate from Paul Matty to mate with it.

He's also experimenting with carbon fibre air boxes but they are not quite ready yet.

Will this fit in an S1? I have a full collection of larger air boxes that do not fit in an S1 body as they don't allow the bonnet to close all the way.

Fits in my S3 fine, not sure if an S1 would be different? Suggest you discuss with Dave directly.

CORRECTION: This version of Dave's full depth airbox fits the +2 engine bay but is too deep for the baby Elan - it fouls the bonnet lip. The box fits in the car fine . . . until you refit the bonnet. Doh.

Appreciate the update. Very few of the modified air boxes fit the early S1. They all seem to foul the interior bonnet edge lip at the front of the box where the air hose connects. If anyone has one that doesn't I would really like to know about it.

That's exactly the same place where it fouls on my S3. It will be same on all the baby Elans I imagine.

Dave intends to make a mould and then produce air ices which would suit a baby Elan. He's also talking about a carbon fibre box and back plate. That would be nice.

There are Elans and there are +2s (and to be truly pedantic, there are also Plus 2s).

The Lotus Baby was conceived in a barn in Hornsey and born one dark winter night in an inspection pit. The mother, father and three wise men knew they were onto a winner. After the announcement of the birth in the press, everyone wanted one .....

The three wise men came bearing gifts: a water pump repair kit, a broom handle to hold the bonnet up, and an AA membership card.

Any updates on this air box from Dave?

Unfortunately the airbox from Dave, although rather beautifully finished, just wouldn't fit in the S3. I have the later S4 "square" back plate, but it was just too deep - fouled the engine bay wall. +2 based design so it was always a risk. Rather than fettle it, Dave gave me a refund and in the end I fitted an S4 airbox from Paul Matty.

I have fitted one of Dave's airbox cover onto the twin cam in my 1970 S4. After reading this thread earlier this year I was concerned about fit but there were absolutely no fitting problems at all.

Bonnet (hood) and body clearances are ample at all times, even on a very lumpy slow idle. The backplate is the standard S4, 'square' later type.

The cover is superbly built and finished. It is also supplied with studs which, if used, make fitting and removal so much easier than the traditional bolts.

Highly recommended!
