Valve cover color??

Wondering if anyone knows a source for the hammertone blue paint that was used on the S1 valve cover?

Hi Kurt,
When I restored my S1 26/0159 I found the best match was Galmet brand Hammertone
"Reef Blue". This is in a spray can , I then clear coated over this and it has stayed perfect .
This is an Australian spec car , not sure if all S1s were blue.

Hammertone is the same as Hammerite right?

Lowes stocks it, other wise do a google search.

I used two coats of ICI Hammerite "HAMMERED blue" applied by brush. If 0159 was blue I suspect every 26 thereafter was that colour until the SE used green.

Here's a picture from 2007 of my trial patch (the darker blue) before I removed the original paint:

and here's how it looked in the car. Other scrappy paint has been addressed since!

Struck out at Lowes on hammertone or hammerite. They carry one blue in Rustoleum that appear's too light. The other two definitely have possibilities. But local suggestion to check with a good automotive paint shop will likely be my next step. My valve cover still has a little of the original paint on it to match to. I'll google Galmut but I've never heard of it over here. ICI I'm familiar with.

Thanks much!

Hello Kurt

This is the method I used.

Hammerite hammered finish paint, the blue I think to dark. so buy one blue and one white. Add white until you are happy with the lighter colour.

If you intend Spray painting you will need Hammerite thinners. From memory I think there is a maximum time limit between coats.

I also etched primed my cover first, although Hammerite say its ok to go straight on to bear metal so maybe not needed.

The original colour paint in Meg's picture looks a good match to my standard S3's cover

I've had a recommendation for etch primer on the Al cover as well. I have several possibilities but the paint shop is first!

Thanks

I've used Rustoleum 7216 Hammered deep blue. The "hammered" look is not as detailed as the original but I felt the color was very close to the original blue.

Thanks, I struck out at my local paint store so ordered a "hammerite" color that looked close. I'll see how it looks when it comes in.

I got my original cover matched at the paint shop, etch primed and then brushed it on.

I think it is designated "hammerite", I'll check the can, from memory it was a "light blue" that the shop darkened to get a match.

Ok, it's actually designated HAMMERCOAT DARK BLUE on the can. Still think it was darkened to match.........

I too am trying to repaint my cam cover. Would anyone have an extra can of Hammered paint they no longer plan to use? I'm having a difficult time sourcing the Rustoleum Hammered Deep Blue (#7216) - according to my conversation with Rustoleum today this color has been discontinued. Thank you.
