Yes bought aluminium radiator, painted black with one fan. As I said you wouldn't think it wasn't a standard fixture as it blends in, I even think the cap is in the same place as original.

Took her out Saturday and today, Sunday, and despite the hot weather I didn't have to worry. Temp guage went up to the mark after 80 a couple of times, when in traffic, but the fan coooled it back to 80. The ambient temp guage read 40 after our pub lunch and only fell to 30 when moving! With the old radiator I would have had the heater blasting out hot air into the cabin in an attempt to keep the gauge from rising and rising, most unpleasant.

Last weekends U.K. weather would definitely test your new radiators capability, glad it came through with flying colours.

Keeping you informed as promised. We are In the advanced testing stage of a full width aluminium radiator with plastic top tank, bottom tank, and fixing brackets for the Elan. This radiator will be sold with options to buy from us a Lotus Cortina 90 degree thermostat housing with filler cap, a 90 degree top hose, a bottom hose, and a 10" inch fan. This will be a bolt on job with no serious modification required. I am attempting to get the whole package out for ?195.00 including UK VAT. This would be plus postage to France. Is this of interest to you? Could you let me know what radiator you have at the moment and what series your car is. Regards, Steve.

Thanks for getting back. A photo would be useful - if you send it to my email address I'll post it on the forum if you're not sure how to.

A couple of questions:

1. Sounds like the thermostat housing is the Burton Power offering?
2. ?195 for the WHOLE package - radiator + brackets + thermostat housing + hoses + fan ?!!
3. Are two 10" suck fans possible (between radiator and engine)?

I have a 1971 Elan Plus 2S/130. Current radiator is a reconditioned 3-row Stanpart narrow radiator and 10" blow Kenlow fan.

I could only get a low quality photo on but I think it will show you the radiator OK. The thermostat housing is available from Burton power and is also still available from Ford. It used to be fitted to the XR2i amongst other models of that period. I am happy to supply radiator only. I will offer the radiator with or without various options so that if you wish to source your own fitting kit, hoses thermostat housing, fan, etc, you can do so. Hope to be test the unit this week and be available for sale in 2 to 3 weeks.

Forgot to answer the fan comment. I have to fit this to a car to guarantee being able to say that the fans will fit the engine side of radiator. They will definitely fit the front side which is always best in my opinion because the motor is not running in a stream of hot air.

I have manged to fit 2 x 10" Spal slim line pullers on my Cliveboy rad. They just fit but it's tight - you have to mod you bracket position and I will still need to crush the trunking a little to get the bonnet to open and close.

However having them engine side does overcome much of the problem of getting your trunking past the front fan at the bonnet brace pinch point (with a 2 fan setup).

What convinced me to go with pullers is that you have the full face of the rad presented to pull the incoming cold air across, so a bigger transfer area. Also, with the very dense Cliveboy core it seemed logical that air would pull through better than it would push through - physicists will probably tell me that is wrong but it seemed instinctively right to me somehow.

I think I may be right in saying that most (all?) modern cars use a puller system - no point in pulling warm air from the engine bay over the rad I guess is one reason?

I used a Burton top stat housing with a Revotec adjustable switch and a custom silicone top hose.

The Clivey rad has not filler cap and it clears the bonnet with plenty to spare. It looks in period too and would, I feel sure, cope with Death Valley.

Overkill perhaps but I plan to use my car for continental trips and I don't want to leave anything to chance. Also, it's a small price to pay for looking after that expensively re built TC motor.

Yes it is. I bored out the top and used 8mm copper tube, slash cut at the bottom, bent and made it a tight fit into the top with a grommet. Seems to do the trick and looks reasonably 'period'

In the light of various members fitting VW / Audi Etc Etc radiators to their Elans, we have developed
a new crossflow aluminium radiator that bolts straight on to the car with little or no modification. The
radiator has plastic tanks and comes with a 10" slimline fan fitted on proper brackets and mounted
against the radiator to ensure that the air is forced through the core. Also included is an aluminium
pipe with filler neck, mounted above the radiator to ensure no air locks.The aluminium pipe is also
fitted with a Lucas type fan operating switch working at on 82 degrees and off 68 degrees. Your
existing hoses are trimmed to accept the new radiator and filler tube. The complete package as

Well whatever rad you choose, i strongly advice you to forget the burton housing which is oriented for a xflow and not a twink.

(Unless you go for the 26r style with the additionnal filler box)

Get instead the correct thermostat housing, the hose routing is much cleaner and natural with no bend.

And now i can stamp it " rally proven"!
