That pesky sprocket dowel hole on the inlet cam hasn't benefited from a visit to Melbourne.

Next stop - home made flapper or maybe back to Melbourne?

Spoke to Clive, he told me the same thing Dad & John had - stop pissing about with enlarging the cam hole, slim down the dowels.....

Don't even need a lathe.....

Turns out I shoulda been using my ears!

Have altered a pair of no off set dowels to suit for trial build, can then do the same as necessary to off set dowels to time them in for final build.

It's manufacture date is Feb 1964. I wonder what model Porsche it's sourced from?

Hi James
Can I see some more photos of your cylinder head #LP5332 from all sides. From the couple you posted in this thread it looks like an early type 2 head (i.e. no square boxes on forward two inlet tract bases) and at that engine number would make it the earliest known as current earliest type 2 head is LP6075. What date was your engine built?

cheers

Sure, just missed an opportunity to photograph it in Tassie last week - am back on the big island now, shall hunt through existing shots when I get a chance.

From memory the engine (block) is stamped by Cosworth as a January 66 assembled engine and it's Laystall crank is stamped November 65. I don't recall exactly why, but I have a notion that it's a motor assembled at St. James Mill Road not long after they moved out there.

So I guess that the head must have been produced 3 to 6 months or so (no real idea of lead time) earlier than that in order to be finished to Mk 16 spec in early 66.

Cheers
James

It appears to have some extra oil drain holes plugged on the exhaust side is that correct?

Do you have a photo of the rear face and bottom face to show the numbers there?

Certainly appears to be the earliest type 2 head produced by date and engine number. it would make sense that this ended up in a race engine as these heads are clearly superior to the type 1 heads in breathing potential with larger inlet tracts.

Yes, plugs are glued in with Araldite by the looks (and other parts, like front oil breather hole in cam cover blanked off with aluminium insert that is definitely araldited in).

Haven't found rear face & bottom face shots yet, inlet tracts look pretty good, though haven't compared them with standard later heads, there's not been much done to combustion chambers, but we'll keep it exactly as is.

Hi James

Thanks for the photos and comments on the follower sleeves. I know Lotus went through - no sleeves, sleeves in exhaust, sleeves in both inlet and exhaust variations, but all this occurred early on according to the Wilkins book and I expected all Type 2 heads to have sleeves in both but it appears not!!!

Its only the absence of sleeving that's meaningful - an early head with sleeves can always have had them added at a later rebuild date.

cheers
