Rohan, - I intend to run this new engine on NGK 8ES plugs - but for, a) - initial start up and - b) ongoing bringing engine up to temperature, should I use warmer plugs?

Cheers

It will run fine on BP8ES as long as the engine gets a good warm-up and decent revs on the warm up lap for a race.

If doing something like a hillclimb then I would swap for something hotter like BP6ES as the colder plugs can cause a stumble off the line without a warm up lap to get them up to temperature

You dont need to start and warm up on a hotter plug and then swap them before you go out to race for a colder plug

cheers

Would a "Straight Out" cap work better Rohan?

You need the side entry cap which while tight should give you enough room to remove the cap and pull the dizzy with the carbs in place. Where did you get the dizzy from ?

Performance Ignition in Nunawading - I may have to relieve that carby mounting boss as at the moment I can get the dizzie in and out with the cap off, just, but only by leaving the rotor button off........

It looks like a reworked VW beetle distributor to me.

It's a unit made up from scratch - may well be some type of VW blank body - I reckon I can shorten the whole unit and use a collar clamp to secure it and/or relieve the carbie mounting boss as the stud in the offending portion doesn't sit all the way down to the back of the hole - so I wouldn't be losing anything by creating some more relief there........

Valve Train as removed from the Mk 16 top end - interestingly, there are tiny wafer thin biscuits within at least some of the top hats.

Sounds like someone could not get thick enough top hats to suit the valves location and cam base circle or did not want to grind down ones they had to suit and decided a shim inside the top hat would work. I would be interested if this was a normal Cosworth approach or a local Australian engine builder method and how they made the shims

cheers
