reasonable engine builder

anyone know of any engine builders,other than the usual known ones,who want an arm and leg,after someone who loves building twin cams in there shed if there is such a person,who knows what they are doing too.

Unfortunately, experience tells me that you usually get what you pay for.

Unless of course you have an engineer friend who hates tv but loves his workshop.

ONE OF OUR CLUB MEMBERS RECENTLY HAD HIS HEAD (CYLINDER THAT IS) DONE BY SCHOLAR RACING ENGINES IN SUFFOLK (ON THE IPSWICH TO NORWICH RD, NEAR TO MENDLESHAM & EYE). WAS PLEASED AND SURPRISED THAT THE WORK WAS DONE QUICKLY & REASONABLY PRICED. THEY ARE WELL KNOWN RACE ENGINE BUILDERS ff SO MAY BE WORTH A TRY ?

Can't recomend a guy I use highly enough - Dave Walker - near Newark, Notts. Been doing this sort of thing for years, works out of his own workshop at the back of his house so low overhead. Good work at a fair price. Email me if you want his details. Rob

... But watch out when replacing the front cover with the water pump.

There is a 'special feeling' you get when you rebuild the front cover (checking all the gaps and seals, replace the engine in the car, connect everything up, drive off and discover 5 mins later that there is water in the sump and it's not nice. Head and sump gaskets are much easier by comparison...

(This happened to me about 20 years ago after a full rebuild)

If you are using the factory workshop manual also watch out for 'one liners' such as "remove the .... ". This single taks can take a whole day or longer to do.

I'd agree with getting what you pay for - I've rebuilt 3 Twin Cams myself, but when it came to things needing more experience than I had with the engine I was real happy that Ivey Engines in Portland Oregon USA was right nearby - and when you walk in they have Twin Cam's laying around everywhere; I'd much rather pay real money for the knowledge an experienced builder has than take it to my local machine shop...which specializes in V8's! But if you want adventure, go for it - I heard a good one about the other Elan in town getting a rebuild by the local hotrod shop; they bead blasted the head.....end of story, engine lasted almost 2 days before destructing - but boy did the head look nice and clean!
