Piston/gudgeon circlips

What type of circlips have you come across in you twincam; the wire type or the flat type. Any problems with either? Did one type supercede the other? Any info appreciated, cheers, John.

John,

These days most of the piston manufactures on our side of the pond are using circlips or snap rings. The only trick is to make sure you install them correctly. They have a square edge on one side and a rounded on the other. The square edge goes out so the clip does not pop out.

Most European Engine manufacturers now prefer the round Wire Circlip when they use fully floating Gudgeon Pins.
The need for accurate assembly is a necessity for both types.
When assembling Wire Circlips it is recommended that the Wire ends are located away from the notch provided for using something like a Screwdriver for removing the Circlip.
This is to reduce the possibility of the Wire wandering out of its Groove.
The Wire solution is chosen purely on the basis of Manufacturing Cost saving but the function & reliability is comparable to that of the rectangular section Circlip.

The pistons I've just taken out of my engine are the wire type.

I'm still looking for two of them that flew across the workshop when I separated them from the conrods.

Mine have only ever been flat. Cosworth forged pistons in my old engine. Current engine, built in '04, QED standard pistons. I don't like the sound of wire in a square groove.

I think the wire ones are in a semicircular groove, cheers, John.

Hi all,

I'm new here, and need help.

I searched the forums and found this old thread, on exactly my problem.

I am rebuilding an engine and took the pistons off the rods to give them a thorough clean. One of the WIRE type circlips took off at an angle, and despite several hours searching, I can't find it. I believe it left the garage and headed into the garden :(.

Anyway, can someone confirm that they are interchangeable with the flat square section type?

Burton sell these --- http://www.burtonpower.com/circlip-pist ... fp548.html but are they a direct replacement for mine?

My pistons are the early type Hepolite 17193c.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I wouldn't try to fit the flat type clips into your pistons as they will not seat properly into the grooves. What you really want is a forum member that keeps all sorts of carp " just in case.." to pop a couple of old ones in the post.. :D :D :D .
P.M me your address and I'll send you some!
Brian.
