oil temp sensor

I want to install a oil temp sensor and bought a smith gauge with sensor.
the sensor is screwed into a adapter plug that srews into the sump.
does any one know what the tread size is of the sump? is it 5/8 UNF?
the sensor tread is 3/8 I believe.
I would hope to use the sump plug to mount the sensor but I can not find the right adapter plug so do I have to fit it some where else in the sump and if so what is the best place?
I see that VDO has some oil sensors for sale on ebay that screw straight into the sump but that is M14 / 1.5 and that sounds not right for our engine?
And would a VDO sensor be caompatable with a smith gauge? probabaly not.
Any thoughts on thus subject would be appreciated.
cheers

Robin,
I brazed on the supplied adaptor with my direct reading oil temp gauge just forward of and slightly higher than the drain plug. Just check it doesn't interfere with fitting the oil filter

At 77 the lifetime warranty period could be fairly brief

The sump plug is 1/2" UNF (20 tpi)
The usual size for Smiths temperature sensors is 1/8" BSP (28tpi) which is around 3/8" od - Tapping an adapter will leave next to no material - around 50 thou between the two threads.
