The only "recent" source I have seen regarding automobile oil filter quality and construction from a first hand point of view is Russ Knize's website. He actually took the time to purchase a large number (20) of different oil filters all for the same application (Ford 5.0). And then examine disassemble, measure, evaluate and compare them and uniformly document his observations and findings.

He also has a good overview summarizing his findings and recommendations regards filters to purchase and to avoid.

There are a lot of poor opinions about Fram oil filters. One of the most interesting is an email that Russ reportedly received from a Fram production engineer -

A similar study was performed on oil filters (14 different makers) for a Honda CBR900RR (with similar observations regarding Fram) -

I have started a similar evaluation of Twin Cam cartridge filters but it is very early as I have only begun inspection of three different makers so far. But, I can clearly recommend that in my opinion the PUROLATOR PremiumPLUS L20021 should be AVOIDED since the holes on the end caps are to large to seat properly the spring loaded shaft in the housing can. I have seen this in two different TC's. This means that the oil filter cartridge will just be loose inside the housing with no directed oil flow through the filter media. Contact with Purolator simply gets me an email saying that they have no other reports of this being a problem and my email was being forwarded to the product engineering group.[/url]
