Oil pressure gauge

PostPost by: 2tmike » Sun Apr 02, 2023 9:09 am

Good morning !!
The 0-60 psi oil pressure gauge in my Plus 2 really needs repair or replacement. It registers 30psi on start up and doesn't respond significantly to engine revs. A substitute 0-100 psi gauge from a Mini gives normal readings and response so I'm fairly sure the gauge is the problem. Are there any companies out there that can repair and recalibrate an early mechanical Smiths gauge like this? the case, glass and bezel are in excellent condition so it would be a shame to scrap it. I've tried a couple on line but had no response from them. Alternatively if anyone has a good one for sale I'd be interested.
Thanks in advance
Mike

Caerbont are what's left of Smiths Instruments, and make reference to 'years of experience.....with original tooling and authentic designs' Their focus seems to be the manufacture of new gauges.

Speedy Cables say they are an independent company, and retain staff 'with their many years of experience and acquired instrumentation skills' They seem to focus on repair and restoration, although they do sell new gauges as well.

I can't find any direct link between them, and their websites make no mention of a corporate tie-up between them, however they do seem to be based in the same building in a business park outside Swansea, so my guess is they are closely related.

I have been to speedy/caerbont, this was at least 10 years ago, and they do seem to be one and the same.

Hope this helps,

For any Yanks who find this thread in future searches and need instrument service on our side of the Atlantic, if Joel Levine is still in business when you read this, he's good with the clocks- had him rebuild the speedo in my former Esprit.

I had a similar problem a few years back.
When I opened it up I found it full of oil that had spent the last 50 years leaking out of some miniscule poor joint.
It was super thick and basically clogging everything up.
Bearing in mind the gauge is a Bourdon tube which activates a needle which is damped by a watch type hairspring, it didn't take much to screw with the readings.
A degrease, dry, lubrication of the very few pivot points, and I had the cheapest "overhaul" in my life as the oil pressure returned to normal.
