Odyssey batteries use a technology called AGM - absorbed glass mat. Quite appropriate really, acid gel is absorbed into a glassfibre mat and placed between the plates of the battery.

These batteries seem to have different charging characteristics than a 'normal' lead acid battery. From Odyssey's website:

The best way to charge an ODYSSEY® battery is to use an AGM specific charger. Chargers such as the ODYSSEY® Battery Portable Charger have the required 14.7 volts needed to properly charge your ODYSSEY battery. They come in 3 sizes; 6 amp, 12 amp and 20 amp.

14.7 volts is higher than the charging circuit on the Elan is designed to produce. You may find you have problems fully charging this battery - although I believe others on the forum have used them successfully. Perhaps they keep them trickle charged at home.

If the alternator you are using has a separate voltage sensing wire a diode can be added to raise the output voltage slightly.
