I have stolen someone else’s photo, but when I get to this stage should the bulb/capillary tube pull out with some encouragement or does something else have to be taken out. I thought I could leave the adaptor in?

Should be able to wiggle it out of there. Careful with the capillary tube. If you smell starting fluid(ether) you just lost about 200 bucks

When you are able to withdraw the bulb, there is a thick washer that will usually stay on the bulb, but be careful not to lose it. It must go back in or the connection will leak.
