If the cap fits !!!

The car, 1972 Sprint with Dellorto carbs. The problem .... I can not fit the distributor cap correctly.
Way back in the 90s the original 23D4 distributor was replaced with the 43D4 touted as a direct replacement.
When the car was in daily use I obviously had issues with the caps as in my box of bits I have several set ups. Top entry with thinner flexible silicon leads and side entry with slightly thicker leads, both of the simple push in type.
The current setup as used when the car was last on the road is a side entry cap but it is impossible to fit in the correct orientation, leads facing firewall. It has to be fitted 180degrees out with the leads facing the radiator. Even this is is a real task.
On attempting to fit the cap in the correct orientation the cap and rubber push in caps for the leads foul the manifold casting and carb accelerator pump mechanism.
Measuring the old and new setups shows a significant difference in overall height from the mounting flange, some 7 or 8mm.
Has anyone else come across this issue?
Are old style caps (screw secured leads) available to fit the 43D4 distributor?
I’ve had a quick scan on the internet and can’t find any.
I can live with the leads exiting forwards but it doesn’t look good and they do get in the way
in what is already a messy area of the engine bay.
