Mis fire

Thinking along different lines to ignition being the problem.....
When the misfire starts at 9-11miles or whatever the engine will have nicely warmed up to normal temperature so following on from that do you get any exhaust smoke?.... and if so what colour?
Is the coolant temperature gauge reading normal during the misfire? Or do you have any coolant loss at all?

Wiring loom and ignition switch are as new.......but by passing it would perhaps be an idea.

When the car begins to misfire, there is no exhaust smoke, and the temperature is normal at approx 80 deg.

On a previous run, there was a strong smell of unburnt fuel, and a spit from the engine before the misfire.

No sign of any fuel leaks in the engine compartment.

Just double checked.....

no coolant loss, and no sign of mayo on the oil filler cap

I had a lumenition system on my Plus 2 years ago and it would randomly just stop after a while. Might go short journeys of a few miles for a week or two no problems but more likely to stop the longer the journey. Tried all sorts of things, finally replaced the optical pickup in the distributor and problem never happened again. Worst time it happened was with my wife driving through a section of road works on the M1 with baby in the back and me out of the country. I’ve never been forgiven for that!

I've ordered a genuine Lucas cap......but not arrived yet......but the current one looks fine.

My next line of attack is the dissy, optical switch, and module.

I've got a spare optical switch and module here.

Will fit the switch first.

Where are the Lucas caps (arms) made?
Bosch is Germany, at least the ones I have!
Born, and brought home from the hospital (no seat belt (wtf)) in a baby!
Find out where the limits are, and start from there

The original Lucas stuff would have been made in UK .

My new Bosch coil was made in Brazil !!

I replaced the optical switch in the dizzy. Refitted the dissy, and set the static timing.

Only took 5 miles on the test run, for the mis fire to start!

I got an original Lucas cap via Ebay. It just has the screw fittings, so I will need to modify it to form the 2 grooves for the clips.

Also I have 2 spare Lumenition modules here.

After that, I am pretty much stumped!

have you tried bypassing and putting Feed direct from Battery as i suggested yet :wink: :wink:
Battery direct to Ignition Circuit.

Next run out,take a spare set of plugs and when the misfire occurs ,drop it into neutral , kill the ignition and coast to a safe stop and read the plugs ??

No such thing as 'an original Lucas cap' unless it is in a dog eared box from pre-'96.

What was Lucas Industries is now a brand that has changed hands a number of times and is now licensed to Elta. I have no idea where they source their parts from. Ironically, the Lucas link on their website leads to a page that says 'looks like something has has gone wrong'.

you can use a Dissy cap from a Classic Mini, it's the same.

The cap is in a dog eared box from the 80's!
Marked GDC 142.

Moulded into the cap is " Lucas. Made in UK".

Got a Mini one from Moss Europe, but its clearly after market.

The guy there said "Everything is now after market!"

If you just leave the car running in your drive does it still happen after a while or is it only when driven? If it happens in the drive, try again with the bonnet open and possible a fan to cool things. Might just help to isolate the cause, overheating, vibration etc.
One other thing, when you stop due to the misfire, quickly nip out and undo the petrol cap to make sure it’s not pulling a vacuum, shouldn’t be any sucking sound.

That happened to me in France about 25 years ago and was not easy to track down. The car restarted as though nothing had happened only to stop again when more power was needed. :roll:
