My 1970 Plus 2S has a Smiths electrical gauge that reads 0-60psi. I need a new sender but can't find a 0-60psi one. I understand from some other threads these might be hard to get now. A quick search shows 0-100psi ones are plentiful.

Can anyone confirm that the sender thread size is 1/8" NPT? That seems to be to most common non-metric thread size for senders, but confirmation would be good.

Also, if I understand how these things work correctly, the sender will, for a given pressure, send a resistance reading that will cause the needle in the gauge to move a certain amount but I don't know if fitting a 0-100psi sender will cause my existing gauge to read correctly.

So, for example if a certain oil pressure causes a 0-100psi sender to send a resistance that would move the needle to the halfway point, that would be 50psi on a 0-100 gauge and presumably 30psi on my gauge.

have I understood this correctly? Any clarification or comments would be appreciated.

Nissonger in the US lists a 0 to 60 psi sender, but unfortunately does not state the thread size

Same deal for Moss Motors, although they provide the Jaguar models that appear to have the 0 to 60 psi gauge range.

In general it is my understanding that yes, the sender and the gauge range have to be matched for accuracy.

That's the problem John, I think the old one is the wrong spec (0-100psi range).

But, on the offchance it is the correct one just malfunctioning, who can rebuild them and does it make economic sense to do so?

You should be able to tell by the part number stamping , /06 is 60 psi , /10 is 100psi.

The sender and gauge usually need to be a matched pair. So, unfortunately, a 100 psi sending unit for an MG may not work correctly with the gauge for a Jaguar or a Lotus.

Thanks Alan, I'll check that out on Monday when they are open. I suspect it might be a 0-100psi one, looking at the very broad fitment list, but will find out and report back.

Right, so I phoned SJ Sportscars and asked them if the sender they have is 0-60psi or 0-100psi. The gentleman said he didn't know but it was the right one for a Plus 2 (although we hadn't discussed spec/year etc).

I explained that the gauge was 0-60psi but that senders for that seemed difficult to get in the right fitting, so i wanted to be sure the one they are listing was correct for my car and wasn't a 0-100psi one .He said he didn't know. I asked how we could find out. He said we can't find out, so if that is important to me I should look elsewhere.

I think I will, and for everything else I might need as well..

If " it's the right one for a Plus2 " , buy it,fit it and return for full refund if not correct..

If correct , post here?
