If you are not looking for originality it makes sense to update the wiring with ample fuses and relays throughout, as others have noted. There are a number of previous posts that you can refer to that have updated wiring diagrams to help you organize the wiring.
I went that route, as well as using an RTMR (Rear Terminal Mini Fuse and Relay panel) to make things tidy, compact, and isolated from heat/dirt as shown below. I located the RTMR near the vehicle plate on left side of the engine bay. I had originally implemented fuse blocks on the firewall but it looked unkempt to me.
An overall (battery, alternator, ..) cutoff kill switch is also good for peace of mind. I placed mine on the rear panel, easy to reach.
