Dynamo Refurb!!

The dynamo on the Lotus Elan is looking rather oily and dirty, the bearing, on closer inspection needs replacing...so a strip down is required......or should I just replace it with an alternator?
I know the pros of swapping to an alternator...not sure there are any cons, however owning a classic isn't always about logic.
Just wonder if anyone else still opts for the Dynamo on their classic and why?

Here are a few suggestions:

- a possible alternative would be to use a Dynator, which is an alternator that looks like a dynamo. It is possible to buy one of these along with a dummy control box and to retain a certain originality.
- It is obviously not your case with a S4 but for Pre-65 FIA Elan racers, alternators are verboten...but an number of competitors / scrutineers do not read the rules!

Having spoken to the French HTP authorities, they are enforcing the App K when competitors step forward for a HTP. They are happy to accept a dynator as it is considered a modification which is in keeping with the spirit of the car.

I have opted for a dynator for the build of my S2 "GTS".

Thanks, I am looking at those, however I am still not sure. I will refurb the dynamo while it's in bits....plus I am replacing the engine bay loom as the one I took out was a bit crispy in places, so the decision will also impact on which loom I go for.

Interesting about the FIA rules.

Providing your motoring isn't all stuck in traffic with headlights and fans running full belt then a dynamo should be fine.
Alternatives need a bit more belt tension and you may not want that load on your water pump bearing.
