1969 S4 - dual gauge disconnect

PostPost by: gherlt » Fri Nov 23, 2018 10:59 pm

Hi,
as I digged into the wiring harness I found more and more patches, some well done, some badly.
So I decided to change wiring, easy as the description is here and/or on the manuals.
Now, one info is missing or I am not able to find it.
The dual gauge, the electrical version.
Can it be disconnected at the instrument ?
Or do I need to take the sender out ?

Thanks
Guillermo

I have not seen a Smiths electrical dual gauge (water temp & oil pressure) fitted in an S4 Elan?? are sure it is electrical? looks like a capillary water gauge to me and if so you will need to remove the "bulb" from the cylinder head and remove the gauge complete with the bulb and tube from the front of the dashboard.
The oil pressure line can be disconnected from the back of the gauge.
Sorry if I am mis-understanding you.

Hello,
I have no idea if it is original or not, but based on your comments, mostly not.
The copper line that goes f
rom sender to instrument is 1mm thick, it looks like a "solid" copper cable.
The capillary "tube", from my s3 measures 2.7mm.
The thickness makes me think it's electrical.
The surrounding looks like an insulation, but isn't, it's a braided hose.

Good morning Guillermo,
Have a look at the other end.
The thermometer bulb is in the side of the thermostat housing on the cylinder head and the capillary tube comes from there and usually has a few coils in it to allow for movement of the engine. A wire would not need that.
The connection will either be a copper capillary tube or an electrical terminal. This should tell you which sort of sensor you have.
Best of luck

Hello,
It is an "ordinary" one.
My problem was basically that I have never seen an electrical one, and capillary tubes were thicker and surrounded by a spiral.

This one very thin (1mm) and braided.
The sender is identical to the ones with capillary tube.
And it works, at 80? it reads 85?.
Could it be a refurbished instrument ?
Thanks for your replies!
Guillermo
